This book explores the place of the Dakhla and Kharga oases in Egypt and the Ottoman Empire. It aims to contribute to the reflection on the characteristics and limits of the notion of Ottomanity, as seen by the inhabitants of this region, which, from Cairo, seemed distant and isolated. It draws on several sets of private archives, largely unpublished, supplemented by travelers' accounts and contemporary documentation.
